You change your cleanser. You buy a richer moisturiser. Maybe you swap shampoos because your hair still feels dry or frizzy after washing. When none of that seems to make much difference, it is easy to assume you simply have difficult skin or hair.
But there is one part of the routine that rarely gets the same attention: the water coming out of the shower.
Tap water can contain chlorine, minerals and other substances that may affect how skin and hair feel after washing. This is particularly noticeable for people who already deal with dryness, irritation or the familiar effects of hard water. It is the problem Curo Skin has built its filtered shower products around.
Your skincare routine starts before the moisturiser
Most conversations about dry skin focus on what happens after a shower. We talk about body lotions, facial serums and moisturisers, but the shower itself can be part of the picture.
Hot water can already leave skin feeling dry, and chlorine exposure may add to that uncomfortable, tight feeling for some people. Hard water can also leave mineral deposits behind, which is one reason hair sometimes feels rough or dull even after using a good conditioner.
This does not mean shower water is responsible for every breakout, dry patch or bad hair day. Skin and hair are far more complicated than that. Still, if you have spent years changing products without considering your water, it is a variable worth looking at.
That is what makes the idea behind Curo Skin interesting. Instead of adding another product to the bathroom shelf, the brand focuses on filtering the water you already use every day.
So, what is actually being filtered?
The Curo filtered shower head uses three filtration materials: KDF-55, calcium sulphite and activated carbon. According to the brand, the system is designed to reduce chlorine, heavy metals and organic compounds in shower water. Curo states that its filter can remove more than 99% of chlorine and heavy metals under certain testing conditions.
There is a practical detail here that matters too. Shower water is hot, so a filter has to perform under different conditions from the filter you might keep in the kitchen.
Curo Skin says independent testing found its shower head maintained an average chlorine reduction of 91% across the recommended filter lifespan. The replacement filters are designed to last around 90 days or 13,000 litres before replacement.
The appeal is actually pretty simple
A filtered shower head is not the most glamorous addition to a skincare routine, but that may be part of its appeal. Once installed, there is very little to think about.
The Curo shower head fits a standard shower hose and does not require tools for installation. The company also says its design boosts water flow by 18%, so filtering the water is not supposed to mean settling for a weak shower.
The filter itself needs replacing roughly every three months. There are subscription options for people who would rather have replacements arrive automatically, although buying them separately remains an option.
Another thoughtful detail is the filter housing. Curo Skin says it uses recycled non-woven cloth, reducing plastic use by 90% compared with conventional plastic filter housings.
Will filtered water transform your skin?
This is where it is worth keeping expectations sensible.
A shower filter is not a treatment for eczema, acne, dermatitis or other skin conditions, and it should not replace advice or treatment from a healthcare professional. What it can do is change one part of your daily environment by reducing certain substances in the water reaching your skin and hair.
For someone living in a hard-water area, struggling with dry-feeling skin after showering, or wondering why their hair feels rough despite using plenty of products, that can be an appealing experiment.
There is also something refreshingly straightforward about looking at the water itself. Sometimes the answer is not another bottle of shampoo or another expensive moisturiser. It may simply be worth paying attention to what those products are being washed off with.
That is ultimately why Curo Skin stands out. It takes something most of us barely think about and makes it part of the skin and hair conversation.
If your skin regularly feels tight after a shower or your hair never seems quite as soft as you expect, checking your shower water may be a more sensible next step than buying yet another product.
