There is a familiar point in almost every frustrating haircare routine. The shampoo gets blamed first. Then the conditioner. After that comes a new mask, a leave-in treatment, perhaps a scalp serum, and eventually an expensive product promising to bring dull hair back to life.
Sometimes those products help. But if your hair goes straight back to feeling dry, rough or difficult to manage after every wash, the problem might not be sitting on your bathroom shelf.
It could be coming through the shower.
That is the thinking behind Curo Skin, a UK brand that has made shower water part of the conversation around healthier-looking hair and skin.
The haircare step most of us never question
Water seems like the most neutral part of washing your hair. It gets everything wet, rinses the shampoo away, and that is usually the end of the thought process.
The reality is a little more complicated.
Hard water contains higher concentrations of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. It is particularly common in London and the South East of England. These minerals can leave residue on hair and make shampoo and other products harder to rinse away completely.
Over time, hair can feel dull, frizzy or weighed down. Colour-treated hair presents another concern because mineral deposits from hard water can affect how hair holds colour.
Chlorine is a separate issue. It is used in water treatment for an important reason, but regular exposure can contribute to dryness by affecting the natural oils in hair and skin.
Suddenly, repeatedly switching conditioners does not seem like the only option worth considering.
What Curo Skin does differently
Instead of creating another product to apply after washing, Curo Skin focuses on the water used during the wash itself.
Its filtered shower head contains KDF-55, calcium sulphite and activated carbon. The filtration system is designed to reduce chlorine, heavy metals and other impurities before the shower water reaches your hair and skin. The company says independent testing showed an average chlorine reduction of 91% throughout the filter’s recommended lifespan.
It is a fairly straightforward idea. Rather than trying to deal with the effects of certain substances after every shower, reduce exposure to them in the first place.
That does not mean a shower filter suddenly replaces your entire haircare routine. Shampoo, conditioner, heat protection and the products suited to your particular hair type still matter. It simply addresses something those products cannot control: the quality of the water used to wash them in and rinse them out.
There are a few clues your water deserves attention
You do not need to become an expert on local water chemistry. Sometimes the bathroom provides clues of its own.
Persistent white deposits around taps and shower screens are a familiar sign of hard water. Hair that feels coated soon after washing, an itchy or flaky scalp, stubborn frizz and a lack of shine can also give you a reason to investigate your water quality.
This is particularly worth considering when your hair behaves differently away from home. If it suddenly feels softer after washing while travelling, despite using similar products, different water could be one explanation.
The founder of Curo Skin actually describes a similar experience. He noticed improvements in his dry skin and flaky scalp while on holiday, which prompted him to look more closely at the role water was playing. The brand says the eventual shower head followed 18 months of development and multiple prototypes.
It is also easier than changing your whole routine
One reason people keep buying hair products is convenience. Replacing a shampoo takes seconds. Anything involving household plumbing sounds considerably less appealing.
Fortunately, a filtered shower head does not necessarily involve renovating the bathroom.
The Curo Skin model is designed to fit a standard shower hose without tools. Its filter is recommended for replacement every 90 days, and the shower head comes in chrome, brushed gold and midnight black finishes. The brand also states that the design increases water flow by 18%.
For rainfall showers, Curo Skin has developed a separate inline rainfall filter designed for standard fittings, so the filtration idea is not limited to handheld shower heads.
Maybe your shampoo isn’t the problem
There is no single explanation for dry or frizzy hair. Genetics, colouring, heat styling, weather, products and scalp health can all play a part. A shower filter should not be treated as a cure for medical scalp or skin conditions either.
Still, water quality is easy to overlook precisely because it is such an ordinary part of the routine.
Before spending another £30 on a mask because your current one apparently “stopped working,” it may be worth asking whether product choice is actually the whole problem.
That is what makes the approach from Curo Skin worth considering. Better haircare does not always have to mean adding another bottle to the shower. Sometimes it means taking a closer look at what is already coming out of it.
